The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) adopt the following policy based on amended language from the American Medical Association’s Policy D-160.921 as MSSNY’s own policy on Sensitive Locations / Protected Areas in New York State.
“Our MSSNY: (1) advocates for and supports legislative efforts to designate healthcare facilities as protected areas by law; (2) will work with appropriate stakeholders to educate medical providers on the rights of undocumented patients while receiving medical care, and the designation of healthcare facilities as protected areas where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement actions should not occur; (3) encourages healthcare facilities to clearly demonstrate and promote their status as protected areas; and (4) opposes the presence of ICE enforcement at healthcare facilities.” MSSNY submit a resolution to the AMA asking the AMA to amend policy D-160.921 by addition and deletion as follows:
“Our AMA: (1) advocates for and supports legislative efforts to designate healthcare facilities as protected areas by law; (2) will work with appropriate stakeholders to educate medical providers on the rights of undocumented patients while receiving medical care, and the designation of healthcare facilities as protected areas where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement actions should not occur; (3) encourages healthcare facilities to clearly demonstrate and promote their status as protected areas; and (4) opposes the presence of ICE enforcement at healthcare facilities.” (HOD 2025-210)
