267.996: Sudden Closure of Residency
MSSNY will urge the American Medical Association to advocate for the fair treatment of displaced residents from a hospital that closes or reduces a residency program by following these guidelines: (1)Work with the appropriate accrediting agencies to ensure that when there is a residency program reduction or closure, the sponsoring institution allows residents already in the program to complete their education, and honors the provisions of training commitments; and (2)Work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), AOL, and the appropriate specialty societies to ensure that where a residency program is reduced or closed, funding and resources are made available for relocation of the residents to new programs, in a manner that is minimally disruptive to the residents’ career and personal life.
