MSSNY has adopted the position that there is danger to the public health and safety by allowing prescriptions for contact lenses to be filled without time limitation and without any requirement for proper ophthalmic follow-up care and that the same strict standards that regulate the dispensing of oral and topical medications, medical devices and appliances also apply to the dispensing of contact lenses to the residents of New York, and that contact lens prescriptions have an expiration date of one year after the date they are written.
