195.902        Rethink the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit

The Medical Society of the State of New York will advocate for a thoughtful reevaluation of the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit and consider replacing it with an Annual Comprehensive Examination. This examination should integrate preventive care services, a thorough physical exam, and, most importantly, the management of acute or chronic health conditions. This approach is an opportunity for patients to have their healthcare needs met, is a more efficient use of limited primary care services and is likely more effective in improving patient outcomes. Additionally, physician reimbursement for the Annual Comprehensive Visit should be greater than the AWV to reflect their increase in scope and encourage their acceptance and utilization.
